1. Upper secondary schools − end of 2004/2005 school year

 

At the end of 2004/2005 school year, there were 410 active upper secondary schools on the territory of the Republic of Croatia. According to the methodology of statistical data collection, they include 679 school units of various kinds, depending on the educational plan and programme, which was by 2.1% more than at the end of the 2003/2004 school year. The number of class units has not significantly changed.

 

The number of upper secondary school students decreased by 2.0% as compared to the previous school year. The share of female students was 50.4%, although their number was not equally arranged in different types of schools. Thus, there were 70.1% of female students in secondary art schools, 62.7% in grammar schools, 49.9% in technical and related schools and only 36.6% in industrial and crafts schools. 47 698 students completed upper secondary education, out of which female students made 50.7%.

 

Students, who enrolled in upper secondary schools, learn one, two or three foreign languages, providing that at least one foreign language is obligatory for all students. Out of the total number of students, English is learned by 83.2% students, German by 42.5%, Italian by 13.6%, French by 3.9% and Russian, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese only 0.6%.

2. Upper secondary schools beginning of 2005/2006
   school year

 

 

At the beginning of 2005/2006 school year, there were 411 active upper secondary schools on the territory of the Republic of Croatia. According to the methodology of statistical data collection, they include 683 school units of various kinds, depending on the educational plan and programme, which was by 2.7% more than at the beginning of the 2004/2005 school year. The number of class units has not significantly changed.

 

The number of students in regular upper secondary schools decreased by 1.3% and increased in secondary schools for disabled youth by 6.0%. The share of female students was 50.1%. Out of the total number of students in regular education there were only 2.2% repeaters, as follows: 3.3% in the 1st grade, 2.7% in the 2nd grade, 1.6% in the 3rd grade and 0.5% in the 4th grade.

 

By year of birth, in regular upper secondary schools there were 98.6% students in the age group from 14 to 18, which is the age appropriate for upper secondary education. There were only 1.3% students older than 18 and 0.1% younger than 14, who mostly attended secondary art schools (music and ballet ones).
