NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Sources and collecting methods

Data on the number of livestock and poultry are collected separately for legal entities, and for private family farms.

Data collected on these farms include data on the number and weight of livestock and poultry, balance of cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry, milk production (cows’, sheep’s and goats’), wool, eggs and honey.

Data on legal entities were collected on reports submitted to the Central Bureau of Statistics by postal service, while data on private family farms were collected by using the interview method on a selected sample.

The sample for private family farms was selected out of the basic set on the basis of the 2003 Agricultural Census and is completely random; it was conditioned only by a criterion that at least 3 households had to be located in the same settlement. The sample consisted of 21 county samples and the basic set comprised all private family farms.

The sample size was affected by financial means allocated in the Budget of the Republic of Croatia for 2006 and the share of private family farms in particular counties. The sample included approximately 9 000 households.

For each county, the sample was selected on the basis of the analysis of seven sizes: cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, poultry, horses and beehives.

When necessary, corrections were done on the basis of all available data, as was the case of the production of milk and eggs and the total slaughtering of the livestock.

Elements used in the calculation of the livestock production are obtained through surveys (PO-51-2a and PO-51-2b forms), because they contain questions on the weight of the livestock and poultry as well as on the production of milk, eggs and wool, data on import and export and on slaughtering of the livestock and poultry.

Coverage and comparability

Reporting units for legal entities are classified according to the NKD 2002. into section A Agriculture, hunting and forestry, classes 01.2 and 01.3. The reports are also submitted by the units classified elsewhere if they are engaged in the breeding of livestock, poultry and bees. The coverage for legal entities is selective (those employing 10 or more persons).

Reporting units for the Survey on Livestock Production on Agricultural Farms are private family farms engaged in the breeding of livestock, poultry and bees.

Definitions

Increase of cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry is calculated by adding the difference in the weight of export and import to the weight of the slaughtered livestock and the difference of the weight of the herd at the end and at the beginning of a reference period.

Milk. The production of cows’ milk at legal entities as well as at private family farms is presented. The total milked quantity in a reference period is presented, irrespective of the way of milking.

Trimmed wool. The quantities of trimmed (clipped) wool from the grown up and young sheep (matted wool and cropped wool) are reported as the raw wool.

Egg production. Data for the total number of laid eggs by all categories of hens (eggs for setting and eggs for human consumption) are reported.

Honey production. Data for the total honey production realised in beehives with mobile and immobile honeycombs are reported.
