Situation as on 15 August, 2008 (preliminary data)

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Source and methods of data collection

The final data on harvested areas and actual yield of early crops and fruits are collected through the Report on Actual Yield of Early Crops and Fruits (PO-32a and PO-32b forms). Data on harvested areas of early crops are presented in hectares, while the total yield and yield per hectare are presented in tonnes. With regard to early fruits, surveys include fruit-bearing trees, the total yield, which is presented in tonnes, and yield per one bearing-tree presented in kilograms. These data are collected separately for business entities and parts thereof and for private family farms. Data concerning business entities and parts thereof are collected by reporting method and the reports are delivered by mail to the Central Bureau of Statistics.

Data for private family farms are collected by using the interview method applied to a selected stratified sample. The sample for private family farms was selected from the basic group according to the 2003 Agricultural Census.

This is the survey in which the definition of an agricultural farm was applied in accordance with the EU criteria.

The sample size was conditioned by the financial means allocated from the 2008 State Budget of the Republic of Croatia and the share of agricultural farms by counties. The sample consisted of 11 001 households.

Data on private family farms which didn't qualify according to the said definition and were therefore not included in the basic group for a sample, were estimated according to changes in phenomena within a sample and were added to the sample data. All expanded data were compared to data from previous years, 2003 Agricultural Census data and available administrative sources (the Register of Agricultural Farms of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development etc.). On the basis of all available data, corrections were done when necessary.

Data on yields refer to the situation as on 15 August.

Coverage and comparability

Reporting units are business entities and parts thereof taken over form the Register of Business Entities, which are defined in sections A Agriculture, hunting and forestry and B Fishing, according to the National Classification of Activities, 2002 version (NN, No. 13/03). The coverage is selective.

Reporting units are also households engaged in agricultural production, for which interviewers collected data. Private family farms have been selected from the 2003 Agricultural Census data base.

Definitions

Actual yield is the yield obtained after the harvest by deduction of all the losses before the harvest and during the transport and combine - harvesting etc. Since the moisture of cereals may vary due to the weather conditions, the actual yield is presented as an averagely moist yield, that is, grains estimated with 13% of moisture.

The actual yield of early fruits includes the yield of rape fruits.
