LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY SLAUGHTERED IN ABATTOIRS
DECEMBER 2009
In line with the process of harmonising the livestock production statistics with the European standards, monthly data collection on livestock and poultry slaughtered in abattoirs has been introduced since 1 January 2009 instead of the former quarterly data collection.
As compared to November, considering the total cattle categories, the highest increase was recorded for slaughtered sheep, 86% in the number and 74% in the weight. An increase was also recorded for slaughtered pigs, 59% in the number and 30% in net weight as well as for slaughtered poultry of all kinds, 10% in the number and 13% in the weight.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY
Sources and methods of data collection
The reports on livestock and poultry slaughtering (PO-52/M and PO-52/M/OBRT forms) are submitted on monthly basis, separately for legal entities and for tradesmen. The forms have been harmonised with methodological and legal regulations of the EU.
This survey serves for collecting data on the number of slaughtered livestock by types and categories, their weight before slaughtering (gross weight), the weight of dressed carcass (net weight) and data on coefficients of utilisation.
All livestock and poultry slaughtered on the territory of the Republic of Croatia and those imported from the EU countries or outside of the EU have been registered.
Coverage and comparability
Reporting units that submit monthly reports on livestock and poultry slaughtering are legal entities and parts thereof as well as tradesmen engaged in the activity of livestock and poultry slaughtering. The Address Book for Legal Entities and Parts Thereof (PO-52/M form) and that for tradesmen (PO-52/M/OBRT) was taken over from the Entry Book of Approved Facilities of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development – Veterinarian Directorate.
Apart from changes in data collection frequency, some changes in the categories of livestock and poultry observed have also taken place.
Changes in certain categories of livestock and poultry refer to the more detailed category review in the cattle group as well as the more detailed review of data on the slaughtering of poultry by kinds.
Definitions
Net weight is the weight of dressed carcass of slaughtered animals without skin and blood, eviscerated and beheaded (not including piglets and poultry), and after removal of the viscera, fore ends and hind legs with knuckle.
Coefficient of utilisation of slaughtered livestock and poultry is a percentage ratio of the weight of the slaughtered cattle and poultry (net weight) and the weight of livestock and live poultry (gross weight), and it is presented in percentage calculated to one decimal place.
