INDICES OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION, 2008

In 2008, as compared to 2007, the volume index of gross agricultural production increased by 8.0%. In the crop production this increase amounted to 15.9%, while in the livestock production it decreased by 1.5%. This increase in the crop production was affected by an enlarged production of crop production, particularly of maize (by 75.8%) and oil crops. A slight decrease in livestock production of 1.5% was caused by the decrease in the production of pigs.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Sources and methods of data collection

Volume indices of agricultural production are calculated from data obtained through regular agricultural statistical surveys:

1. The Monthly Report on Sale of Agricultural Forestry and Fishing Products from Own Production, for Legal Entities
        (PO-31a/M form)

2. The Monthly Report on Purchase of Agricultural, Forestryand Fishing Products − Private Family farms (PO-31b/M form)

3. The Report on Yields of Early Crops and Fruits (PO-32 form)

4. The Report on Yields of Late Crops, Fruits and Grapes (PO-33 form)

5. The Report on Yields of Citrus Fruits and Olives (PO-34 form)

6. The Survey on Livestock Production at Private Family Farms (PO-51-2b form)

7.     The Annual Report on Livestock Production for Legal Entities (PO-51-2a form)

8.     The Quarterly Report on Livestock and Poultry Slaughtering in Abattoirs for Legal Entities (PO-52/3M form, the Quarterly           Report on Livestock and Poultry  Slaughtering – Tradesmen (PO-52/3M/OBRT form)

9.     Data on import and export of live animals.

Coverage and comparability

According to the National Classification of Activities, 2002 version, the calculation of the agricultural production volume comprised section A Agriculture, hunting and forestry, division 01 Agriculture, hunting and related service activities, excluding group 01.5 Hunting, trapping and game propagation, including related service activities.

The aggregation factor for the calculation of indices was a moving three-year average of producers' prices obtained through reports on sale and purchase of agricultural products (PO-31A/M and PO-31b/M forms).

Definitions

Net volume indices of agricultural production were calculated out of the total production, lessened by products used for feeding the livestock.

Chain indices of agricultural production are calculated on the basis of data on production, which are then multiplied with aggregates (moving three-year average of prices obtained through statistical surveys on sale and purchase of agricultural products) for current and previous years, respectively. Chain indices are obtained by calculating the ratio of a current and previous year.
