According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development and the Records of Issued Licences for Fishermen Engaged in Commercial Fishing, the number of fishermen, vessels and fishing nets in 2008 did not significantly change, as compared to 2007.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

Source and methods of data collection

 

Data for the annual report on fishermen, vessels and their equipment in 2008 have been taken over from branch offices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development – Directorate of Fisheries, with the situation as on 31 December 2008. Since 1998, the Ministry has assumed from the Office of Economy the charge of keeping records on the number of fishermen, vessels and their equipment based on the issued licences for commercial fishing, according to the Maritime Fishing Act (NN, No. 74/94) and the Maritime Fishing Act – consolidated text (NN, No. 46/97).

 

The data on vessels and fishing equipment classified according to the Maritime Code and the Regulation on Licence for Commercial Maritime Fishing are only one of the segments in fishing (commercial fishing).

 

Coverage and comparability

 

Legal entities and parts of legal entities defined in section B Fishing, according to the National Classification of Activities – NKD 2002. (NN, No. 13/03), that are engaged in commercial fishing are included and their coverage is full. As for independent fishermen, only those who are engaged in commercial fishing according to the records kept by the Directorate of Fisheries and Mediterranean Agriculture are included.

 

Definitions

 

Commercial fishing is an activity of catching fish and other sea organisms for profit, the Maritime Fishing Act – consolidated text, (NN, No. 46/97).

 

Ship is a vessel that has the length of 12 m and more and weight of 15 GT and more. Fishing boat is intended and equipped for catching fish and other organisms in the sea or on the seabed.

 

Boat is a vessel that is not a vessel intended for catching of fish or other living creatures in the sea or on its bottom, the Maritime Code (NN, No. 17/94).

 

According to the Regulation on Licence for Commercial Maritime Fishing (NN, No. 99/97), fishing nets are classified into the following groups: trawl nets, purse seine nets, drift nets and single and triple gillnets.

 

Trawl nets are benthic trawl net, pelagic trawl net, coastal trawl net, dredges for Noah’s ark and dredges.

 

Purse seine nets are purse seine for small pelagic fish, purse seine for great pelagic fish, purse seine for mullets, purse seine for needlefish and purse seine for smelt.

 

Drift nets are drift net for sardines, drift net for picarels, motion drift net, drift net for needlefish, drift net for amberjack, drift net for smelt, drift net for with trap and drift net with frightening rope.

 

Single gillnets are gillnet for sandsmelt, gillnet for smelt, gillnet for picarel (Spicara smaris), gillnet for sardines, gillnet for picarel (Spicara flexuosa), gillnet for cacckarel, gillnet for bogue, gillnet for various fish, gillnet for Atlantic bonito, gillnet for sharks, gillnet for lobsters, gillnet for angle shark and gillnet for sea spider. Triple gillnets are gillnet for salema, triple gillnet for various fish, gillnet for solea and gillnet for cuttlefish.
