GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT FOR REPUBLIC OF CROATIA, STATISTICAL REGIONS AT LEVEL 2 AND COUNTIES, 2005 and 2006

This Release presents estimates of the gross domestic product for the Republic of Croatia, statistical regions at level 2 and counties, in 2005 and 2006, according to economic activities.

The results are available at current prices and per capita.

The data are based on the annual data on the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Republic of Croatia for 2005 and on the provisional data on GDP for 2006, which are obtained as the sum of quarterly calculation of GDP data.

The GDP data for 2005 and 2006 are not revised according to new, improved data sources and calculation methods.

The data on the gross domestic product for statistical regions at level 2 and counties will be revised according to new, improved data sources and calculation methods in the course of 2009.

It should be noted that the GDP per capita of statistical regions at level 2 and counties measures production and not the living standard.

METHODOLOGICAL EXPLANATIONS

The purpose of a statistical survey

The purpose of the statistical survey is to estimate the gross value added (GVA) and the gross domestic product (GDP) for the Republic of Croatia, statistical regions at level 2 and counties.

Sources and methods of data collection

Data sources for the calculation of GVA and GDP are the national accounts data, annual business surveys, the Annual Report on Agriculture Production, annual data on persons in employment and salaries and other statistical data.

The data are published according to the National Classification of Territorial Units for Statistics (NKPJS) (NN, No. 35/07) that is harmonised with the EC Regulation No. 1059/2003 of the European Parliament and the European Council on the establishment of a common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS), Official Journal L 154.

Coverage

The calculation covers all activities, following the concept of the 1993 System of National Accounts (SNA 93) and the 1995 European System of Accounts (ESA 95).

Definitions

Regional accounts are a subsystem of national accounts in which specified territorial units for the statistics are the main objects of observation. The concepts used in regional accounts are the same as those used in national accounts. A gross domestic product at market prices is a sum of values added by activities including items at the level of national economy that are not classified by activities, such as: financial intermediation services indirectly measured (FISIM) and taxes on products less subsidies on products.

Other explanations

GVA and GDP for the Republic of Croatia, statistical regions at level 2 and counties are calculated by using the indirect method. National GVA figures by activities were allocated to regions by applying adequate distribution keys.

Since the work on improving the methodology of the regional GDP and GVA calculation is still in progress, it is possible that in forthcoming periods some revisions of the existing data will have to be done.
