INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION VOLUME INDICES –
SEASONALLY AND WORKING-DAY ADJUSTED INDICES AND TREND, 2009
The total industrial production in the Republic of Croatia in June 2009, as compared to May 2009, decreased by 0.8%.
The monthly industrial production in the Republic of Croatia in June 2009, as compared to June 2008, decreased by 8.9%.
In the period from July 2008 to June 2009, as compared to the industrial production in the period from July 2007 to June 2008, the total industrial production decreased by 4.9%.
Regarding the NKD 2007. sections, in June 2009, as compared to May 2009, the production in Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply decreased by 3.3%, in Mining and quarrying by 0.6%, while in Manufacturing it remained at the same level. Regarding the MIGs 2009., the production of Non-durable consumer goods increased by 0.3% and of Capital goods by 0.1%, while the production of Energy decreased by 2.7%, of Durable consumer goods by 1.2% and of Intermediate goods by 0.6%.

In June 2009, as compared to June 2008, the industrial production in Manufacturing decreased by 9.6%, in Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 8.1% and in Mining and quarrying by 6.3%. Regarding the MIGs 2009., the production trend of Durable consumer goods decreased by 26.2%, of Capital goods by 13.1%, of Non-durable consumer goods by 9.7%, of Intermediate goods by 8.4% and of Energy by 5.8%.

Comparing the last twelve months with the previous ones (average annual chain change rate), the section Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply increased by 2.1%, while Mining and quarrying decreased by 5.8% and Manufacturing by 5.4%. Regarding the MIGs 2009., Energy increased by 0.3%, while Durable consumer goods decreased by 15.8%, Capital goods by 7.3%, Intermediate goods by 5.8% and Non-durable consumer goods by 4.1%.

According to the selected NKD 2007. divisions, in June 2009, as compared to the previous month, the industrial production increased in the following divisions: Printing and reproduction of recorded media by 1.6%, Manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials by 0.7%, and Manufacture of beverages by 0.1%, while in Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas and in Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment it remained at the same level as in the previous month, that is, the change rate was 0.0%. The decrease was recorded in the following divisions: Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products by 4.8%, Manufacture of other transport equipment by 2.6%, Manufacture of electrical equipment by 1.3%, Manufacture of machinery and equipment n. e. c. by 1.0%, Repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 0.7%, Manufacture of food products by 0.2% and Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 0.1%.

In June 2009, as compared to the same month of the previous year, according to the selected NKD 2007. divisions, the industrial production in Repair and installation of machinery and equipment increased by 7.3%, in Manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials by 4.6%, in Manufacture of beverages by 1.2% and in Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas by 0.3%, while in Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment it decreased by 23.7%, in Manufacture of machinery and equipment n. e. c. by 17.2%, in Manufacture of other transport equipment by 15.4%, in Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products by 11.3%, in Printing and reproduction of recorded media by 6.3%, in Manufacture of food products by 6.2%, in Manufacture of electrical equipment by 5.2% and in Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 0.5%.
In the period from July 2008 to June 2009, as compared to the previous twelve months, according to the selected NKD 2007. divisions, the industrial production increased in the following divisions: Repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 3.3%, Manufacture of beverages by 1.1%, Manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials by 0.9% and Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas by 0.3%. The decrease was recorded in the following divisions: Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment by 11.6%, Manufacture of machinery and equipment n. e. c. by 7.9%, Manufacture of electrical equipment by 5.2%, Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products by 4.8%, Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 3.5%, Manufacture of food products by 3.4%, Printing and reproduction of recorded media by 1.6% and Manufacture of other transport equipment by 1.5%.
All change rates in this Release were calculated on the trend basis.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY
Seasonal adjustment has been done by using the TRAMO-SEATS method on the monthly index series, which starts with the January 1998 index for the total industry (sections B, C and D, excluding group 35.3) and for selected NKD 2007.1) divisions as well as for the Main Industrial Groupings, version 2009 (MIGs 2009.). A trend is a series of seasonally adjusted indices from which a random component has been excluded. Due to the character of the implemented seasonal adjustment method, the extension of index series, by adding of new monthly observations for each new month, June cause subsequent corrections of already published seasonally adjusted indices and trend for several months backwards.
Since January 2009, new definitions have been applied for MIGs aggregations in the calculation of aggregated indices in regard of a further harmonisation with the EU statistical standards.2) Thus, in all publications of the Central Bureau of Statistics it will be marked with MIGs 2009. instead of the previously used MIGs 2001. The grouping at the level of the NKD 2007. groups or divisions according to the MIGs 2009., using alphabetic marks of abbreviations, was done as follows:
AI Intermediate goods: the NKD 2007. divisions and groups: 07 – 09, 10.6, 10.9, 13.1 – 13.3, 16, 17, 20.1 – 20.3, 20.5, 20.6, 22 – 24, 25.5 – 25.7, 25.9, 26.1, 26.8, 27.1 – 27.4 and 27.9
AE Energy: the NKD 2007. divisions: 05, 06, 19 and 35
BB Capital goods: the NKD 2007. divisions and groups: 25.1 – 25.4, 26.2, 26.3, 26.5, 26.6, 28, 29, 30.1 – 30.4, 32.5 and 33
CD Durable consumer goods: the NKD 2007. divisions and groups: 26.4, 26.7, 27.5, 30.9, 31, 32.1 and 32.2

Comparability of series according to MIGs 2009.
Industrial production volume indices for the MIGs 2009. aggregates published in this first release are not comparable to industrial production volume indices previously published in releases or other publications of the Central Bureau of Statistics for the MIGs 2001. aggregates or for MIGs versions before 2009. This is because different concepts, classifications and definitions were used for their groupings, so it is not possible to combine or directly link them.
Time series of monthly indices of industrial production that were backcasted from NKD 2002. activities to NKD 2007. activities at the level of MIGs 2009. aggregates for the period from January 1998 to December 2008 were published on 19 May 2009 in tables 8. and 9. of the First Release No. 2.1.3/1.
The selected NKD 2007. divisions were defined on the basis of their participation in the gross value added of industry of the Republic of Croatia. Relative amounts (division structure), with which particular industrial divisions of NKD 2007. participate in the gross value added of industry of the Republic of Croatia, are published in the First Release No. 2.1.1. Industrial production volume index, in which original indices of industrial production are published for the first time and which is usually issued one week before this first release.
Special notes to users
Time series of monthly indices of industrial production backcasted from NKD 2002. activities to NKD 2007. activities at the level of sections and divisions as well as MIGs 2009. aggregates are available for the period from January 1998 to December 2008 and were published on 19 May 2009 in tables 8. and 9. of the first release No. 2.1.3/1.
In addition, backcasted time series are also available in the electronic form on the basis of users’ personal request to the Statistical Information and Documentation, Archive and Publications Division of the Central Bureau of Statistics.
