NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Data source and methods of data collection

Data in this Release are based on the Monthly Report on Retail Trade (TRG-1 form). This survey has been carried out since

1 January 1998.

Methodology for this survey is based on the Eurostat recommendations. Reporting units are business entities classified by their prevailing activity into retail trade (section 47 of the NKD 2007.). Selected business entities engaged in other activities, executing the above-mentioned ones, are also included.

Since 1 January 2008, the sample framework consists of active legal entities and parts thereof, including newly-registered ones, which are, in the Register of Business Entities of the Central Bureau of Statistics, registered in the NKD 2007. section G and their activity status confirmed according to the data base of the Register of Tax Payers (the annual income tax registration for 2006) and according to data of the Register of Annual Financial Reports of the Fina (2007).

The Survey is carried out by using a sampling method. The evaluation of the whole group is based on the results obtained through samples.

The quality of results obtained by this survey depends strictly on the updating of registers, which represents the framework for the selection of the sample.

The standard error in the evaluation of the total turnover is 0.006. It means that at that level the reliability interval, that is, the interval index evaluation, amounts to 95% (the interval ranges from 108.02 to 110.38). The chain retail sale turnover index ranges from 108.92 to 110.88. At lower aggregation levels this error is larger.

Coverage

The sample covers all large and medium-sized business entities, while micro-sized and small business entities are selected by random sample method.

The sample is divided into strata according to the prevailing activity and the size of the business entity. Business entities are divided by prevailing activity on the basis of the NKD 2007. (NN, No. 58/07). By size, they are divided into micro-sized, small, medium-sized and large ones.

The criterion for defining the size of a business entity is the number of persons in employment. Concerning business entities engaged primarily in non-trade activities, the number of persons in employment in trade activities is taken into account. Micro-sized business entities employ 0 – 9, small ones 10 – 49, medium-sized ones 50 – 249 and large ones 250 and more persons.

The following significant changes were introduced in 2009, as compared to previous years:

--   since January 2009, tradesmen have been covered by the survey

-     the application of the new version of the National Classification of Activities – the NKD 2007.

-     the finalisation of a new sample framework based on the updating of the Statistical Business Register of the Central Bureau of       Statistics, leading to the change of the prevailing activity of many business units

-     the selection of a new sample of reporting units.

The backcasting of data series from 2005 has been done according to the NKD 2007. activities, 2005 = 100 base year. Due to the rounding of the decimals, the indices for 2008 and 2009 were corrected.

Due to these changes, indices may sometimes exhibit unusual modifications in relation to previous years.

Trade professions were grouped into larger groups due to the comparability with the 2008 data.

Calendar adjustment (WDA) and seasonal adjustment was conducted with the use of TRAMO-SEATS method by applying the programme interface “Demetra” on data series from January 2005 to April 2009.

Definitions

Turnover is a total value of all goods sold and services provided on the market in a month, irrespective of whether paid up or not. It also includes the value added tax.

Data on the retail trade turnover are presented in two ways:

-     for the total turnover generated by all business entities with the retail trade as prevailing activity (classified in division 47
      of the NKD 2007.);

-     for the retail trade turnover expressed by all business entities
engaged in this activity, irrespective of their registered
      prevailing activity.
