NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

The data source is the Quarterly Report on Visitors to Main Tourist Sights and Attractions, TU-21 form.

Results obtained in this survey refer to some individual sights and attractions on the basis of the written consent of a reporting unit in question (Article 56 of the Official Statistics Act, NN No. 103/03).

Observation units are all main tourist sights and attractions for which a number of visitors was reported in the reference period. The number of visitors is usually obtained through the number of tickets sold, but it is also possible for it to be determined according to other records or expert estimates. The following tourist sights and attractions are covered: national parks, parks of nature, strict reserves, forest parks, significant landscapes, monuments of nature, park architecture monuments, old cities, castles, mines, monasteries, famous people’s birth houses, eco-villages, museums and galleries, cultural monuments, festivals, sports events, other events, thermal baths, baths on the Adriatic coast, other bathing resorts, fairs, zoological gardens, aquariums, arboretums, botanical gardens and other tourist attractions not elsewhere classified.

Only attractions that in 2008 recorded more than 10 000 visitors were covered in 2009.

Tourist attraction is an attractive element in a certain tourist destination, such as a cultural-historical heritage, natural entirety or phenomenon, performance or event, which either motivates future tourists to come or is a mainstay of the development of tourism on that destination.

National park is a spatial, mostly unchanged area of extraordinary and multiple natural values, which comprises one or more preserved or slightly changed eco-systems.

Park of nature is a spatial natural or partly cultivated area with accented esthetical, ecological, educational, cultural, historical, tourist and recreational values.

Strict reserve is an area consisting of unchanged or slightly changed natural characteristics, which is intended exclusively for scientific research, providing that it does not change a biological diversity, authenticity of landscape and that it does not affect natural processes.

Special reserve is an area with specially accented one or more unchanged natural components, which has a remarkable scientific value and purpose. A special reserve may be of different kinds, as follows: botanical (floristic, reserve of forest plants etc.), zoological (ornithological, ichthyologic etc.), geological, hydrological, sea reserve.

Park forest is a natural or planted forest of an outstanding landscape value, intended for rest and recreation.

Protected landscape is a natural or cultivated area of either exceptional esthetical, cultural or historical value, or a landscape characteristic for a particular region.

Monument of nature is a detached unchanged part or a group of parts of nature, animate or inanimate, which have a scientific, esthetical, cultural or historical value. It may be geological (a mineralogical or paleontological site, structure of layers etc.), geomorphological (caves, solitary rocks etc.), hydrological (well, falls, lake etc.), botanical (rare plant or plant specimen important for the location it grows on etc.), spatially small botanical or zoological locality etc.

Monument of park architecture is an artificially formed space (public garden, botanical garden, arboretum, city park, line of trees, group of trees or an individual tree as well as other types of garden and park architecture) that has a remarkable esthetical, stylistic, artistic, cultural, historical or scientific value.

Cultural-historical sights: old city, archaeological sites, castle, mine, monastery, famous person’s birth place, eco-village, monument of culture.

Cultural and religious centres: museums and galleries, pilgrimage places.

Museums are institutions that systematically and scientifically process, keep and exhibit items that are significant for education, science and art.

Events: concerts, festivals, summer games, sports events, other events.

Bathing resorts are enclosed and cultivated water areas, usually situated near a water source, intended for bathing. These are recreational bathing resorts.

Thermal spas are bathing resorts with water used for health purposes, usually for medical rehabilitation.

Coastal bathing resorts are enclosed and cultivated water areas situated near the sea, lake or river.

Fairs are media, seen within an overall promotion, means of sale advancement, that is, of personal communication with the market.

Zoological garden is an enclosed space in which live specimens of various animal species are kept, exhibited for public, procreated and examined for scientific and educational purposes.

Aquarium is an enclosed space in which live specimens of water fauna are kept in water, exhibited for public, procreated and examined for scientific and educational purposes.

Arboretum is a separate space or a part of a botanical garden where trees and bushes are grown for scientific, ornamental and educational purposes.

Botanical garden is a space where plants (herbs, bushes) and trees from various parts of the world are grown for scientific, educational and sightseeing purposes.

The Nature Park Papuk spreads through two counties: of Virovitica-Podravina and of Požega-Slavonia. Data on visitors are expressed as for the County of Virovitica-Podravina.

The Vransko Jezero Nature Park also spreads through two counties: of Zadar and of Šibenik-Knin, but data are expressed as for the County of Zadar.

A certain number of attractions, although important in a particular region, was not processed in this survey, either because they were closed in the reference period or tickets were not sold or there were not any records on the number of visitors.

Data on counties are given by territorial constitution according to the Act on Territories of Counties, Towns and Municipalities of the Republic of Croatia (NN, No. 86/06).
