NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Source and methods of data collection

Data on transport, supporting and auxiliary activities and postal, courier and telecommunication services are collected through weekly, monthly and quarterly statistical reports.

Coverage

Data were collected from business or legal entities that are, according to the NKD 2007. (NN, No. 58/07), either classified into section H Transportation and storage or involved in transport of passengers or goods and in supporting activities in transport. Data on registered road motor vehicles and trailer vehicles were obtained from the Ministry of the Interior. Data on postal and courier services are submitted by legal entities that are either registered or are engaged in the activity classified in division 53 (Postal and courier activities) according to the NKD 2007. Data on telecommunication services were taken over by the Croatian post and Electronic Communications Agency.

Data on road transport of goods for hire or reward and for own account refer to the operation of legal entities and natural persons engaged in the transport of goods. The random sample method is used to carry out the survey. Vehicles selected into the sample are monitored over one week. Statistical units are freight road vehicles (including road tractors) with a loading capacity of over 3 500 kg that are registered with the Ministry of the Interior. Since 1 January 2008, the survey has been revised, so data are completely harmonised with the EU legislation and are not comparable to previous years.

Data on traffic in sea ports include arrivals and departures of passengers and loaded and unloaded goods on ships under domestic and foreign flags and relate to the activities of all sea ports in the Republic of Croatia. This covers ships that are more than 12 m long and have a gross tonnage of more than 15 or those that have authority to carry more than 12 passengers.

Data on inland waterway transport include domestic and international transport of goods on vessels under domestic flags. Cross trade transport is not included.

Data on traffic in inland waterway ports include arrivals and departures of goods on both domestic and foreign vessels. The data are supplied by harbour master’s offices.

The total traffic of passengers at airports includes a number of passengers embarked and disembarked during commercial operations. Passengers in direct transit are excluded. The total traffic of freight relate to the freight loaded and unloaded during commercial operations. Freight in direct transit is excluded. A new methodology has been applied since 2008, so data are harmonised with the EU regulations and thus they cannot be compared with previous years.

Besides this First Release, other six first releases are published quarterly with more detailed data and notes on methodology: the Land Transport and Transport via Pipelines, the Cross-Border Traffic, the Water Transport and Supporting Activities, the Air Transport and Supporting Activities, the Transhipment of Goods and the Postal, Courier and Telecommunication Services.
