AIR TRANSPORT AND SUPPORTING ACTIVITIES

SECOND QUARTER OF 20091)

 

This release reports on data concerning air transport of passengers and freight by domestic airline carriers as well as on traffic of aircraft, passengers and freight in airports.

 

In the second quarter of 2009, the number of passengers carried by the Croatian carriers in air transport amounted to 562 thousand, which was by 17.0% less than in the same period of 2008.

 

The transport of freight decreased by 33.0% in the second quarter of 2009, as compared to the same period of 2008.

 

The aircraft traffic in airports decreased in the second quarter of 2009 by 3.4%, as compared to the same period of 2008.

 

In the second quarter of 2009, the traffic of passengers in airports amounted to 1 374 thousand, which was by 6.8% less than in the same period of 2008.

 

The traffic of freight increased by 2.6% in the second quarter of 2009, as compared to the same period of 2008.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

Source and methods of data collection

 

Data on air transport of passengers and freight were collected on the Quarterly Report on Air Transport (PZ/T-11 form).

 

Data on the traffic of aircraft, passengers and freight in airports were collected on the Monthly Report on Traffic in Airports (electronic datasets and PZ/M-21 form).

 

Coverage

 

Data on air transport of passengers and freight are collected from domestic airline carriers, that is relate to the activities of legal entities registered in the Register of Business Entities of the Central Bureau of Statistics, which are engaged in the air transport of passengers or freight.

 

Data on supporting activities in air transport relate to the activities of the airports Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Osijek, Braθ and the air landing place Mali Lošinj.

 

A new methodology has been applied since 2008 and data have been   harmonised with the regulation of the EU.

 

Definitions

 

The transport of passengers includes passengers carried by domestic airline carriers.

 

Freight transport includes goods and mail transport carried by domestic airline carriers.

 

Passenger-kilometre is a unit of measure representing the transport of one passenger over a distance of one kilometre.

 

Tonne-kilometre is a unit of measure representing the transport of one tonne over a distance of one kilometre.

 

The total aircraft traffic in airports relate to the number of all (commercial and non commercial) operations of landing and taking-off of aircrafts, except state flights (military, customs, police or other law enforcement services of a State).

 

The total traffic of passengers in airports includes a number of passengers embarked and disembarked on commercial operations. Passengers in direct transit are excluded.

 

The total traffic of freight relate to the loaded and unloaded freight on commercial operations. Freight in direct transit is excluded.
