POSTAL, COURIER AND TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICES
FIRST QUARTER OF 20091)

 

This release reports on data on realised volume of the postal, courier and telecommunication services.

 

In the first quarter of 2009, the total number of postal letters increased by 5.6%, as compared to the same period of 2008.

 

The number of minutes spent in the immobile telephone network decreased in the first quarter of 2009 by 3.4%, as compared to the same period of 2008.

 

The number of minutes spent in the mobile telephone network increased in the first quarter of 2009 by 4.0%, as compared to the same period of 2008. 

 

In the first quarter of 2009, there were 922 million SMS messages sent, which was an increase of 5.1%, as compared to the same period of 2008.

 

In the first quarter of 2009, there were 5 793 thousand MMS messages sent, which was by 5.1% more than in the same period of 2008.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

Source and methods of data collection

 

Data on postal and courier services are collected by using the reporting method through the Quarterly Reports on Postal Traffic (P-PT/T-11 form). Data sources are business entities.

 

Data on telecommunication services are taken over from the Croatian Post and Electronic Communications Agency.

 

Coverage

 

Data on postal and courier services are submitted by legal entities that are either registered or are engaged in the activity classified in division 53 according to the NKD 2007. (Postal and courier services).

 

Postal and courier services comprise services of delivery of postal letters, delivery of parcels and delivery of telegrams.

 

Postal letter services include the number of EMS items received in the domestic traffic, that is, the number of postal letters received from abroad and posted abroad in the international traffic Since 1 January 2009, methodology of calculating the posted postal letters in international traffic has been revised and data are completely harmonised with the EU legislation, so they are not comparable to previous years.

 

Parcels include the number of parcels received in the domestic traffic, that is, the number of parcels received from abroad and posted abroad in the international traffic.

 

Telecommunication services include the telecommunication traffic realised in immobile and mobile telephone network.

 

Minutes spent in the immobile telephone network include the total traffic in the immobile network realised in the domestic and international traffic and measured by time units – minutes. The domestic traffic includes the total traffic in the own immobile network, the traffic directed to other immobile networks as well as the traffic directed to mobile networks. The international traffic includes the total traffic in the immobile network that starts within and ends outside the Republic of Croatia. Roaming traffic is not included.

 

Minutes spent in the mobile telephone network include the total traffic in all mobile telephone networks realised in the domestic and international traffic and measured by time units – minutes. The domestic traffic includes the total traffic in the own immobile network, the traffic directed to other immobile networks as well as the traffic directed to mobile networks. The international traffic includes the total traffic in the immobile network that starts within and ends outside the Republic of Croatia.

 

SMS messages show the total number of SMS messages sent.

MMS messages show the total number of MMS messages sent.

 

Internet minutes spent show the total “dial up” minutes realised via the public commutation phone networks used for the internet access. 

 

Definitions

 

Postal letter is a type of item in the postal traffic, which includes letters, postcards, blanks, secograms, small parcels, record delivery items, registered mail and insured letters.

 

Express mail service (EMS) is a special postal service providing to users the fastest transfer of letters and parcels, except postal and telegram orders.

 

Telecommunication service is a service of transfer, transmission or reception of signs, written text, pictures, speech, sounds or releasing of any kind rendered through wire, light, wireless or other electromagnetic systems, including the possibility of using those systems either as a whole or in part, through renting, sale or some other way.

 

Immobile network is telecommunication network in which all elements are connected by using wires.

 

Mobile network is a telecommunication network in which some elements are not connected by using wires. In that way, a connection is possible even when users are physically moving.

 

SMS messages (Short Message Service) are short text messages.

 

MMS messages (Multimedia Messaging Service) are messages which include multimedia services (pictures, music).
