NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Sources and methods of data collection

Data on streets, parking places and squares (circuses) in 2008 were collected by using the reporting method via the Report on Streets, Parking Places and Squares (circuses) (KOM-3 form).

Reporting units were municipal companies, municipal service funds and local government bodies.

This statistical survey is carried out quadrennially.

Coverage and comparability

The survey covers only urban settlements with, according to the 2001 Population Census, 5 000 or more permanent population, with the exception of Krapina, which was included because it is the biggest urban settlement in the County of Krapina-Zagorje.

Definitions

Street is a space surrounded by parcels and buildings, which serves for the traffic of vehicles and pedestrians. As a rule, it has its own name.

The statistical observation unit is a street as a whole. When determining the number of streets to be monitored, the names of streets are taken into account.

Street length is limited by the first and the last numbered parcel, that is, building in case when the whole street is built-up.

Total surface area of streets comprises the surface areas of a roadway and pavement, lawn and surface areas of other interspaces between a roadway and a pavement (surface areas of ditches etc.). Intersections are counted only once. If an intersections is at the same time a square (circus) and, as such, has its own name, it is not included in the surface area of streets, but in the surface area of squares (circuses), which is expressed separately.

Roadways are parts of streets intended for the traffic of vehicles, as opposed to a pavement, which is intended for the circulation of pedestrians:

     - Modern layer is made of asphalt, cubes and concrete,

     - Other types of layers are made of crushed stone as well as
            roadways without any layers.

Square (circus) is a space surrounded by buildings and sites intended for construction, with several streets flowing towards it and that, as a rule, serves for traffic. As opposed to intersections, a square (circus) is an extended intersection that has its own name.

Public parking place is a public traffic area intended for motionless traffic, on which parking and watching over of vehicles are paid for.

Covered parking place is a public garage providing a great number of parking spots.

Outdoor parking place is a parking place situated at an open public area (streets, squares).

Marked parking area is a public traffic area marked with vertical and horizontal signalisation intended for parking of vehicles.
