NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

Source and methods of data collection

 

Data on cemeteries in 2008 were collected through the reporting method on the form – Report on Cemeteries (KOM-3a).

 

Reporting units were business units engaged in funeral activities, maintenance of cemetery and crematories.

 

This statistical survey has been conducted every forth year.

 

Coverage and comparability

 

The survey covers only urban settlements with 5 000 and more inhabitants according to the 2001 Census, with the exception of Krapina which was included as the largest urban settlement in County of Krapina-Zagorje.

 

Definition

 

Cemetery covers certain number of plots included in the spatial plan of a certain settlement, town/municipality serving as grounds for burying the dead.

 

Surface area under park is a green area consisting mainly of ornamental trees and shrubs expertly landscaped, which serves for the decoration of a cemetery.

 

Grave is the space of certain dimensions at the cemetery serving as burial place (grave, vault, urn grave, niche in arcades, tomb).

 

Mortuary is a building with decorated rooms in which a deceased person is placed on the catafalque for commital service before the burial.

 

Crematory is a building that serves for cremating a deceased person.

 

Church is a sacral object providing the community of parishioners with a place for liturgical celebrations and other sacral acts.

 

Chapel is a church on the territory of a parish serving for the occassional liturgical celebration while the other sacral life is carried out at a parish church.
