NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Sources and methods of data collection

Data on public green areas in 2008 were collected by using the reporting method via the Report on Public Green Areas (KOM-4 form).

Reporting units were business entities in charge of the maintenance of public green areas in a selected monitored urban settlement.

This statistical survey is carried out quadrennially.

Coverage and comparability

The survey covers only urban settlements with, according to the 2001 Population Census, 5 000 or more permanent population, with the exception of Krapina, which was included because it is the biggest urban settlement in the County of Krapina-Zagorje.

Definitions

Parks are green areas, consisting mainly of ornamental trees and shrubs expertly landscaped, which are intended for the decoration of settlements, for the rest of inhabitants and to refresh and purify the air in built-up areas of a settlement.

Lawns are areas situated mostly in streets, blind traffic spots or deliberately placed there for directing the traffic, green areas in residential quarters as well as street lawns and other green areas.

Park forests are huge tracts of land covered by forest trees. They, like forests, have protective purpose, only park forests are partly arranged: there are paths and tracks, planted brushwood and decorative seedlings, built-up facilities for rest and leisure etc.

Public children’s playground is an open-air area where children stay and play, equipped with a merry-go-round, slide, swings, sandpit etc.
