DRAINAGE OF LAND, 2008

In the year 2008, there were 3 318 ha of the total surface land flooded by interior waters, out of which there were 1 272 ha of cultivated land, 2 settlements, 2 buildings and  80 km of roads. There were 66% of the total surface area and 81% of cultivated land, 50% of settlements, 60% of buildings and 11% of roads that were less flooded by interior waters in 2008 than in the previous year.

In 2008, the drainage system covered 1 243 263 ha of the total surface area and 824 856 ha of cultivated land.

There were 858 887 ha of the total surface area and 698 676 ha of cultivated land drained.

There were 155 705 thousand m3 of the total quantity of pumped water in 2008, which was 59% more than in the previous year.

In 2008, there were 75 pumping generating units with the total capacity of 11 700 l/s. As compared to the previous year, both the number of pumping generating units increased by 5%, the capacity by 140%  and operational power by 34%, while the operation of the pumping generating units was by 31% longer.

In 2008, as compared to 2007, the length of the main canals lessened by 12% (6 262 km) and the length of other canals by 3% (24 764km).

In 2008, there were 17 624 km of the net of canals and 24 764 km of pipelines used for the drainage.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Source and methods of data collection

Data on land drainage are collected by using the reporting method through the Report on Land Drainage (VOD-3B form).

Reporting units are legal entities and parts thereof engaged, according to the Act on Waters (NN, No. 107/95) in water management, that is, the protection against harmful effects of waters and the treatment of water courses (the National Classification of Activities, 2002 version, Section F, Class 45.24).

Coverage and comparability

Statistical surveys are carried out on the basis of the full coverage. The Register of Business Entities is used as a source for making the address book.

Surveys provide data on land areas and facilities flooded by interior waters and land drainage.

Definitions

Surface lands and facilities flooded by interior waters refer to surface lands and facilities that were flooded, in the course of a year, by interior waters, irrespective on the duration of floods or the level of water in flooded areas.

Drained land includes total and cultivated land under the drainage system.

Total drained land includes total surface land drained in the course of a year, irrespective of the number of drainages done and the method of draining (by pumping or via canals).

Pumping stations are those that are used for the drainage, providing that they can be equipped with one or more pumps.

Total operational power includes the power of all pumps in pumping stations measured in kilowatt hours.

Total capacity of pumps (Q) refers to the installed capacity of all pumps in pumping stations measured in litres per second.

Total quantities of pumped water refer to all quantities of water pumped out in the course of a year.

Main canals are all canals through which all the water from the drained land is carried directly to the recipient. Their length is measured in kilometres.

Other canals include all canals (collection and accumulation ones) through which the water is directly or indirectly routed into main canals. Their length is measured in kilometres.
