COLLECTION, PURIFICATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF WATER, 2008
In the year 2008 there were 527 594 thousand m3 volume of abstracted water. Out of that, 265 981 thousand m3 of water were abstracted from the ground sources, 165 896 thousand m3 from springs, 48 617 thousand m3 from the watercourse, 5 242 thousand m3 from reservoirs, 15 983 thousand m3 from lakes and 25 875 thousand m3 from other water systems.
As compared to the year 2007, the total volume of abstracted waters in 2008 increased by 2% and the volume of water abstracted from other water systems decreased by 25%.
In the year 2008, the total volume of water distributed from the public water supply amounted to 354 434 thousand m3, which was by 10% more than in 2007. In the structure of water consumption, the greatest consumers were households, which consumed 183 469 thousand m3 or 52% out of the total volume of distributed water in 2008. The water losses were still present and amounted in 2008 to 173 160 thousand m3, or 49% out of the total volume of distributed water.
In the year 2008, the number of settlements connected to the public water main network increased by 3%. It was 2 331.
The total length of water mains was 34 706 km. There were 1 117 024 connections. The number of street hydrants increased by 3%, so it amounted to 105 011. The number of public water pumps (529) increased by 1% as compared to 2007. The total number of reservoirs was 1 251, which showed an increase of 2%, as compared to the year 2005.
In the year 2008 there were 1 199 pumping plants, which was by 9% more than in 2007. The number of water treatment plants (130) remained at the 2007 level.
In the year 2008, the number of drinking water treatment plants increased (iron-removing plants by 3%, filters by 7%, chlorinators by 4%), while the number of other facilities decreased by 23%. The number of sedimentation tanks remained at the 2007 level.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY
Source and methods of data collection
Data on the public water supply are collected through the annual statistical survey (VOD-2V form) on the basis of the Annual Implementation Plan of Statistical Activities of the Republic of Croatia for 2007 (NN, No. 117/06).
Reporting units are legal entities and their parts engaged, according to the Waters Act (NN, No. 107/95) in supplying settlement with water as well as communities and other organisations that manage the public water supply.
The report is prepared by legal entities and their parts registered, according to the NKD 2002. (NN, Nos. 13/03 and 52/03), in section E Electricity, gas and water supply, class 41.00 Collection, purification and distribution of water.
Coverage and comparability
Statistical surveys are based on the full coverage and the source for the address list is the Register of Business Entities.
The survey provides data on water supplied and distributed from the public water mains, on water mains and facilities as well as on the number of pumping plants and water treatment plants installed in public water mains.
Due to the change in content of VOD-2V form for 2008, some data are not comparable.
Definition
Water supply from public water mains is the total volume of water abstracted from ground waters, springs, watercourses, reservoirs and lakes as well as total volume of water abstracted from other water systems.
Abstracted volume of water is the total volume of water abstracted from water springs. Source may be ground and superficial ones. Public springs are all sources that are used in supplying of water mains, such as ground watercourses, springs, watercourses, reservoirs and lakes.
Distributed volume of water is the volume of water sold to consumers.
Total water losses are actually found losses in water mains caused by mechanical troubles or installation defects on water mains.
Water treatment plants are facilities used for purification (conditioning). Tanks are divided into underground and elevated (tower-shaped) ones, used for the accumulation of water and reaching the required pressure.
Lenght of water mains is the length of pipes used for the supply of water and reaching of the required pressure.
The length of distribution network is the length of the water supply network from a tank to a consumer (excluded are the length of connections and network in a building).
