PROTECTION AGAINST FLOOD, REGULATION OF RIVERS AND IRRIGATION, 2008
In the year 2008, the total land area of 29 722 ha was flooded by external waters, followed by 3 845 ha of cultivated land, 18 settlements, 133 buildings, 124 other business facilities and 54 km of roads.
As compared to 2007, there was 4% of the total land area and 2% of cultivated land less flooded, while 100% of settlements, 18% of buildings, 200% of other business facilities and 350% of roads that were more flooded in 2007.
In the year 2008, the length of dams for the protection against external
waters was 2 549 706 m, while the length of the main protection line was 1 801 655 m. The total land area of 1 801 655 ha was in 2008 protected against flood, followed by 747 471 ha of cultivated land, 495 settlements, 198 industrial facilities, 323 other business
facilities, 343 km of railway lines and 1 619 km of roads. As compared to the year 2007, there were 22% of total land area, 23%
of cultivated land, 2% of settlements, 23% of industrial facilities, 22% of
other business facilities, 30% of railway lines and 10% of roads that were less
protected.
In the year 2008, the total length of the regulated section was1 319 011 m, the length of bank revetment was 285 391 m, the length of parallel facilities was 29 867 m and the length of groynes was8 155 m. There were 113 groynes and the length of cuts was32 184 m, which represents an increase of 7% as compared to the previous year. The number of cuts also increased by 9% and the number of other facilities by 1%.
In the year 2008, there were 17 business entities engaged in irrigation
activities, 5 pumping stations, 27 generating units for sprinkling, 167 km of
canals and
9 831 km of pipelines. As compared to 2007, there were 32% of business
entities, 29% of pumping stations, 4% of generating units for sprinkling and 7%
of canals less and 5 467% of pipelines more. The existing machinery was
sufficient for the irrigation of the total of 3 613 ha of the surface land, which was by 18% more than in 2007). Surface irrigation was used to
irrigate 2 309 ha (77% more than in 2007), 1 258 ha were irrigated by sprinkling (14% more than in 2007) and 46 ha drop by drop (33% less than in 2007). In 2008, the total of 6 329 thousand m3 of
water was used for the irrigation, which was by 98% more than in 2007.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY
Source and methods of data collection
Data on the protection against floods, regulation of rivers and irrigation are collected by using the reporting method through the Report on Protection against Floods and Regulation of Rivers (VOD-3A form) and through the Annual Report on Irrigation Systems (VOD-4 form).
Reporting units are legal entities and parts thereof engaged, according to the Act on Waters (NN, No. 107/95), in the activity Construction of water projects (Section F, Class 45.24, according to the National Classification of Activities, 2002 version) and Operation of irrigation systems (Section A, Class 01.41, according to the National Classification of Activities, 2002 version).
Coverage and comparability
Statistical surveys are carried out on the basis of the total coverage and the Register of Business Entities was used as a source for the preparation of the address book.
The survey is carried out in order to obtain data on land areas and facilities flooded by external waters, protection against flood of external waters, regulation of rivers and irrigation.
Definitions
Land areas and facilities flooded by external waters refer to all land areas and facilities that were flooded by external waters in the course of a year, irrespective of the duration of floods and the level of water in a flooded area.
Protection against floods by external waters refers to land areas and facilities protected by dams against harmful flows of external waters.
Dams refer to all dams that protect a particular area against flood of external waters presented in metres.
Total protected area is presented in regard to all categories of used land that are protected against flood of external waters, such as arable land and gardens, orchards, vineyards, meadows and pastures, fishponds, reed-patches and ponds, forest soil and infertile soil.
Cultivated land refers to categories such as arable land and gardens, orchards, vineyards and meadows.
Settlement is every inhabited place with a specific name, irrespective of the number of houses.
Industrial facilities are presented in regard to the number of buildings and facilities used in the industrial production as well as the number of outdoor warehouses.
Other business facilities include the number of all buildings and facilities used in other economic branches (excluding industry), such as agricultural facilities, warehouses, trade facilities, transport facilities etc.
Railway lines refer to all lines of standard and narrow tracks presented in kilometres.
Roads refer to the length of all roads (main, regional and local).
Flow cut refers to the shortening of the river flow by cutting main loops.
Bank revetments are facilities intended for the protection of river banks.
Parallel
facilities are facilities used for the regulation of river beds.
Their main direction is parallel to the main river flow.
Groynes are auxiliary facilities used to form regulated banks. They are situated under a certain defined angle in regard to the main river flow.
Other facilities include all other buildings used for regulation of a river bed.
Irrigation pumping stations refer to the number of pumping stations and the total capacity measured in litres per second.
Sprinkling generating units refer to the number of sprinkling generating units and the total capacity measured in litres per second.
Irrigation net refers to the length of all canals (main and auxiliary) and pipelines, measured in kilometres.
Surface area, taken as the total cultivated land, covered by irrigation system refers to the land on which there are irrigation systems (canals and associating facilities and pumping plants) and which can be irrigated by using the existing machinery. Out of the total land presented, data on the surface land irrigated in a reference year are shown separately.
