Municipal wastes (household waste and similar commercial, industrial and institutional wastes) including separately collected fractions made 44.3% (1 855 566 t), waste packaging; absorbents, wiping cloths, filter materials and protective clothing not otherwise specified made 2.7% (111 075 t), construction and demolition wastes (including excavated soil from contaminated sites) made 12.6% (523 787 t), wastes from thermal processes made 7.7% (321 795 t), wastes from inorganic chemical processes made 10.3% (431 481 t), Wastes resulting from exploration, mining,  quarrying and physical and chemical treatment of minerals made 9.1% (380 040 t), Wastes from wood processing and the production of panels and furniture, pulp, paper and cardboard made 5.2% (216 791 t) and other groups of wastes made 8.1%.

Out of the total quantity of imported wastes (4 132 t), 98.6% (4 076 t) were imported from the EU Member States and 1.4% (56 t) from other countries. Out of the total imported wastes, 69.2% (2 821 t) consisted of wastes not elsewhere classified in the List of Wastes.

Out of the total quantity of exported wastes (77 484 t), 99.8% (77 345 t) were exported to the EU Member States and 0.2% (139 t) to other countries. Out of the total quantity of exported wastes, 41.5% (32 152 t) consisted of wastes from the wood processing and the production of panels and furniture, pulp, paper and cardboard, 25.3% (19 662 t) consisted of construction and demolition wastes (including excavated soil from contaminated sites) and the rest of 33.2% consisted from wastes from other groups.

INCINERATION AND COMPOSTING OF WASTE, 2008

Out of the total quantity of incinerated waste in 2008, which amounted to 345 918 t, 320 915 t (92.8%) were incinerated with recovery of energy and 25 003 t (7.2%) on the land.

Out of the total quantity of incinerated wastes (345 918 t), wastes from wood processing and the production of panels and furniture, pulp, paper and cardboard amounted to 29.6% (102 399 t), providing that 98.5% (100 891 t) were incinerated with recovery of energy and 1.5% (1 508 t) on the land; waste packaging; absorbents, wiping cloths, filter materials and protective clothing not otherwise specified amounted to 57.9%
(200 436 t), providing that 99.9% (200 310 t) were incinerated with recovery of energy and 0.1% (126 t) on the land; municipal wastes (household waste and similar commercial, industrial and institutional wastes) including separately collected fractions amounted to 3.2%
(11 005 t), providing that 48.3% (5 326 t) were incinerated with recovery of energy and 51.6% (5 679 t) on the land
.

RECOVERY OF WASTES, 2008

In 2008, the total of 383 835 t of wastes were recovered.

Out of the total quantity of recovered wastes (383 835 t), wastes from thermal processes made 27.7% (106 368 t), wastes from shaping and  physical and mechanical surface treatment of metals and plastics made 5.2% (20 015 t), municipal wastes (household waste and similar commercial, industrial and institutional wastes) including separately collected fractions made 6.7% (24 836 t), wastes from wood processing and the production of panels and furniture, pulp, paper and cardboard made 4.5% (17 351 t),  construction and demolition wastes (including excavated soil from contaminated sites) made 38.4% (147 722 t) and wastes from other groups made 17.5%.

DISPOSAL OF WASTE, 2008

In 2008, the disposed wastes amounted to 2 078 708 t. Out of the total quantity of disposed wastes (2 078 708 t), municipal wastes (household waste and similar commercial, industrial and institutional wastes) including separately collected fractions made 44.2% (918 576 t), wastes resulting from exploration, mining, quarrying and physical and chemical treatment of minerals made 15.4% (320 927 t), wastes from inorganic chemical processes made 20.6% (429 029 t), construction and demolition wastes (including excavated soil from contaminated sites) made 10.2% (212 124 t) and other groups made 9% of disposed wastes.

The total quantity of wastes used in land treatment or was released into a water body amounted to 42 475 t in 2008. Out of that, municipal wastes (household waste and similar commercial, industrial and institutional wastes) including separately collected fractions had the greatest share, 77.2% (32 787 t), followed by wastes from agricultural, horticultural, aquaculture, forestry, hunting and fishing, food preparation and processing, 18.7% (7 961 t), and wastes from waste management facilities, off-site waste water treatment plants and the water intended for human consumption and water for industrial use, 1.7% (732 t), while the share of other wastes was 2.4%.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Source and methods of data collection

Data on wastes were collected through the Biannual Report on Wastes (OTP form) in compliance with the 2009 Annual Implementation Plan of Statistical Activities of the Republic of Croatia (NN, No.80/09).

Reporting units are all business entities and parts thereof or tradesmen that were taken over from the Register of Business Entities and classified according to the NKD 2002. into one of activities, employing 20 persons providing that they produce wastes as well as those employing less than 20 persons if they produce a larger amount of wastes.

Reports are based either on records and documentation or on estimation where records and documentation were not available.

Data on quantities and selected types of wastes are collected according to the List of Waste.

Definitions

Waste is any substance or object defined by categories of wastes as prescribed by implementation regulations of the Wastes Act (NN, No. 178/04), which are thrown away or disposed by legal entities and natural persons, or those that they plan to or must dispose.

Inert waste is a waste that is not subject to significant physical, chemical and/or biological changes. It is defined by the regulation from Article 2 of the Wastes Act.

Municipal waste is household waste as well as waste from some production and/or service activity, providing that it is similar to household waste in its characteristics and contents.

Non-hazardous waste is a waste that was, by its contents and characteristics, defined as such by the regulation from Article 2 of the Wastes Act.

Processing of waste is a treatment by which characteristics of the waste are changed by application of mechanical, physical, thermal, chemical or biological processes, including sorting, in order to lower its volume and hazard (toxicity) as well as to facilitate its handling and improve its utility.

Hazardous waste is any waste defined as such, according to its contents or characteristics, by the regulation from Article 2 of the Wastes Act.

Recovery of waste is any action of repeated processing of waste in order to use it for material and energy purposes, as defined in the regulation from Article 104, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 1, of the Wastes Act.

Holder of waste is either a producer of waste or either legal entity or natural person who holds it.

Production waste is a waste generated in a production process in industry, trade or other processes, which, according to its contents, differs from the municipal waste. Remnants made in the production process used in the production process of the same producer are not considered the production waste.

Producer of waste is any entity or person whose activity caused the emerging of waste (original producer) and/or who changes the contents or characteristics of waste by previous processing, mixing or some other treatment.

Waste collection is the process of collection, sorting and/or mixing of waste for transport purposes.

Thermal treatment is a treatment of waste by using thermal energy, incineration and co-incineration as defined in Article 104, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 5, of the Wastes Act.

Treatment of waste is any action of processing or disposal of waste as defined by the regulation from Article 104, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 1, of the Wastes Act.

Sorting of waste is a process applied to collected mixed wastes in order to separate fractions that may be recovered (recycled) and thus reduce the quantity of wastes before their final disposal.
