NATURAL CHANGE IN POPULATION IN THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA, 2008

 

This Release presents data on births and deaths in the Republic of Croatia for the period from 1999 to 2008. Data on births, deaths, marriages and divorces are presented at the county level for the period from 2004 to 2008, as well as data on the natural change in population in 2008 for towns and municipalities.

 

Births

 

The year 2008, as compared to the previous year, recorded an increase of 4.4% in the number of live births, that is, 1 843 more children were born than in 2007. Out of 43 753 live births, 22 482, or 51.4%, were boys and 21 271, or 48.6%, were girls. Also, there were 176 stillbirths in 2008.

 

The live birth rate (live births per 1 000 inhabitants) in 2008 was 9.9.

 

Deaths

 

In 2008 the number of deaths was almost the same as in the previous year, that is, 216 persons, or 0.4%, less than in the previous year. Out of the total number of deaths (52 151) in 2008, there were 26 229, or 50.3%, men and 25 922, or 49.7%, women.

 

The death rate (deaths per 1 000 inhabitants) in 2008 was 11.8.

 

The number of infant deaths in 2008 amounted to 195, that is, 0.37% of the total number of deaths. Out of the total number of infant deaths, 119, or 61.0%, died during the first week of life (0 – 6 days).

 

The infant death rate (the number of infant deaths per 1 000 live births) in 2008 was 4.5, while in the previous year it was 5.6.

 

The lowest infant death rate in 2008 was recorded in the County of Požega-Slavonia (1.1), and the highest one in the County of Istria (7.7), while in the county of Lika-Senj there were no infant deaths.

 

The natural increase rate in 2008 in the Republic of Croatia was negative at -1.9 (-8 398 persons), which was also confirmed by the vital index (live births per 100 deaths), which was 83.9. The County of Split-Dalmatia, the County of Dubrovnik-Neretva, the County of Međimurje and the City of Zagreb had a positive increase rate. The County of Lika-Senj had a zero natural increase rate, while a negative increase rate was recorded in all other counties. The highest negative natural increase rate was recorded in the County of Sisak-Moslavina (-1 018), which also had the lowest vital index (61.3).

 

A positive natural increase rate was recorded in 110 towns/municipalities and the City of Zagreb, a negative one in 435 towns/municipalities, while 10 municipalities recorded a zero natural increase rate.

 

Marriages

 

In 2008, there were 23 373 marriages. The marriage rate (marriages per 1 000 inhabitants) in 2008 was 5.3.

 

Divorces

 

In 2008, there were 5 025 final court decisions related to divorces.

 

Divorce rate (divorces per 1 000 inhabitants) was 1.1 in 2008.

 

The number of divorces per 1 000 marriages amounted to 215 in 2008.
