DEATHS IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS, 2008
This release presents data on deaths in traffic accidents in 2008 according to the type of accident by counties as well as data on deaths in traffic accidents in the Republic of Croatia by type of accident, sex and age of the deceased. At the same time, it presents data on the total number of deaths, the number of persons who died at the age ranging from 1 to 75 as well as on potential years of life lost (PYLL) of persons killed in traffic accidents in the period from 2003 to 2007.
In 2008, there were 707 deaths in traffic accidents, that is, 29 deaths more than in the previous year. The share of deaths in traffic accidents in the total deaths in 2008 was 1.4%.
There were 79.3% male and 20.7% female persons killed in traffic accidents in 2008.
In traffic accidents in 2008, the largest number of persons was killed in accidents in transport vehicles (70.2%), followed by killed pedestrians (18.8%).
The largest number of deaths in traffic accidents occurred in April (11.2%), while the smallest one was recorded in February (5.1%).
The largest number of deaths in accidents in transport vehicles was recorded in July (12.7% out of the total deaths in transport vehicles), while the smallest one was recorded in February (3.4%).
The largest number of pedestrian deaths, 13.5% out of the total number of pedestrian deaths, was recorded in December. The same number of pedestrians, at the same time the smallest one, was killed in March and July. The share of pedestrians killed in each of these months was 3.8%.
According to the number of deaths in traffic accidents, the City of Zagreb holds the first place (95), followed by the County of Split-Dalmatia (56), while the smallest number was recorded in the County of Lika-Senj and the County of Međumurje (14).
In the five-year period, from 2003 to 2007, the total of 3 402 persons was killed in traffic accidents, provided that the number of killed persons per 100 000 inhabitants in individual years ranged between 17 in 2003 (the most), 15.2 in 2004, 14.4 in 2005, 14.8 in 2006 and 15.3 in 2007.
In that period (2003 – 2007), 13.9 persons per 100 000 inhabitants (22.4 per 100 000 men and 5.9 per 100 000 women) were kille in traffic accidents on the average.
In the 1 – 75 age group, there were 3 082 persons killed in traffic accidents, which made 90.6% out of the total number of deaths in traffic accidents.
In that period, the total number of potential years of life lost due to a premature death (before turning 75 years of age) amounted to 106 513.5, that is, 87 481 (82.1%) years for men and 19 032.5 (17.9%) for women.
PYLL rate presents the annual loss of about 500 years per 100 000 inhabitants in the 1 – 75 age group.
In the reference period (2003 – 2007), there was the total of 2 587.59 potential years of life lost due to a premature death in traffic accidents per every 100 000 inhabitants, 4 319.41 years per 100 000 men and 910.20 years per 100 000 women.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY
Data source
The sources of data on deaths are death registers kept in registrars’ offices of every particular area.
Data on deaths are collected through the Statistical Report on Deaths (DEM-2 form) for each registration in a death register, while the data on deaths in traffic accidents refer to the type of violent death as a segment of accident.
Coverage and comparability
The statistical survey on deaths comprises all persons deceased in a calendar year registered in death registers.
Data on vital statistics as well as data on deaths are collected and processed in line with the definition of the total population defined in international recommendations (UN, Eurostat, ESA and SNA).
When comparing data on deaths in traffic accidents in the period from 1998 to 2008 with the data from the previous years, it is necessary to bear in mind that the definition of the total population has been changed.
Definitions and explanations
Types of traffic accidents are defined according to the classification entitled the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, 1994. This classification has been applied in vital statistics since 1995.
Traffic accident is every accident involving any transport vehicle intended or used at that time for carrying of persons or goods from one place to the other, with fatal results for the persons involved.
Railway accident is a traffic accident involving a train or other railway vehicle running on rails, irrespective of whether moving or not. Excluded are accidents in workshops, at turntables or switches and on railway ground if the train or railway vehicle is not involved. This includes pedestrians, cyclists and other persons killed in a crash with a train while crossing the rails.
Accidents in transport vehicles is every accident of vehicles that occurs on a public road and involves vehicles that find themselves partly or fully on the road, as well as accidents out of traffic that occur in the place other than a public road.
Transport (motor) vehicles are the
following: motorcycle, motor tricycle, passenger car, pick-up truck, heavy
transport vehicle, bus, special vehicle for use inside a factory and industrial
facilities, special vehicle used in agriculture, special vehicle used in
building and special off-road vehicle.
Pedestrian is every person involved in an accident who at the moment of accident was not driving in a motor vehicle, railway vehicle, tram, animal-drawn vehicle or some other vehicle, on pedal vehicle or on an animal.
Accidents of non-motor vehicles are accidents of vehicles other than motor (e.g. animal-drawn vehicle, an animal carrying a rider, bicycle, trolley-bus).
This group of vehicles includes also a tram as a means aimed primarily at conveying persons within urban area. It is rail-borne, follows regular traffic signs and moves on separate rails, which make part of the road. The trailer is considered part of the tram.
Other accidents in transport include accidents in water transport, air transport and other non-specified transport accidents.
Potential years of life lost (PYLL) is a statistics that measures the total number of years of life lost due to a premature death in a population as a result of certain causes, that is, deaths in traffic accidents.
The premature death is usually defined as a death that occurs before certain age (e.g., before 75 years of age or less than average life expectancy).
PYLL is calculated by multiplying the frequency with the number of years of life left in regard to their distance from a selected age, taking into account the number of deaths in each age group.
PYLL rate represents the number of potential years of life lost per 100 000 inhabitants in the observed 1 – 75 age group (mid-year population estimate).
Territorial constitution
Data are given by territorial constitution according to the Act on Territories of Counties, Towns and Municipalities in the Republic of Croatia (NN, Nos. 86/06, 125/06 and 16/07) with the situation as on 31st December 2008.
