POPULATION ESTIMATE OF THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA, 2008

This release contains data on the population estimate of the total population of the Republic of Croatia at the county level for the period from 2004 to 2008 and mid-2008 population estimate at the country level by sex and single age as well as by sex and age groups at the county level.

According to the mid-2008 estimate, the Republic of Croatia had 4 434 508 inhabitants, which is by 1 474, or 0.03%, less than in the previous year.

In spite of the total decrease in the population number, seven counties recorded a slight increase in population.

As compared to the previous year estimate, the largest decrease in population number was recorded in the County of Lika-Senj, 591 inhabitants or 1.16%, while the largest increase was recorded in the County of Zadar, 1 613 inhabitants or 0.93%.

The share of women in the total population of the Republic of Croatia in 2008 was 51.8% and of men 48.2% and such ratio was recorded in most counties. Still, the largest one was recorded in the City of Zagreb, where the share of women was 53.5%.

The share of a fertility contingent in the total female population continued to decrease. Therefore, in 2008, it amounted to 45.6%.

The share of youth (0-19 years of age) in the total population at the country level continued to decrease. In 2008, it amounted to 21.34%. This share was the highest in the County of Požega-Slavonia, 24.4%, and the lowest in the County of Primorje-Gorski kotar, 17.4%.

As compared to the total population, the largest number of persons aged 65 and over was recorded in the County of Lika-Senj (23.5%). Unlike the situation in 2007, when this number was less than 16% in only two counties, Zagreb and Međimurje, in 2008 it was recorded in the County of Split-Dalmatia as well.

In 2008, the population continued to grow older, so the average age of the total population of the Republic of Croatia was 41.0 years.

The disproportion of age-sex structure of population was also evident in the average age. Therefore, it was 39.2 years for men and 42.6 years for women.

This tendency of population ageing was seen in the ageing index as well, which, as compared to the previous year, increased by 2.1 and was 105.2% in 2008.

The estimate is done on the basis of census data collected in the 2001 Census of Population, Dwellings and Households.

Data on births are collected on the Statistical Report on Births (DEM-1 form) for every entry in the State birth register.

Data on deaths are collected on the Statistical Report on Deaths (DEM-2 form) for every entry in the State death register.

Data on internal and international migration of population are based on data collected by the Department for Administrative Affairs of the Ministry of Interior.

Coverage

Data published in this release comprise all persons included in the total number of population of the Republic of Croatia in the 2001 Census of Population, Households and Dwellings then all who were after birth entered in a State birth register in the period from 31 March 2001 to the estimate date, all persons who were after death entered in a State death register in the period from 31 March to the estimate date and all persons who registered and/or cancelled registration of their place of residence in the Ministry of Interior in the period from 31 March to the estimate date.

Definitions and explanations

Population estimate is calculated on the basis of the 2001 Census of Population, Households and Dwellings, natural increase and net migration.

The 2001 Census of Population, Households and Dwellings was carried out according to international recommendations for censuses, according to which the total population includes persons who have place of usual residence on the territory of a country, with absence time limit of not longer than twelve months. 

A live born child (live birth) is every child who at birth exhibits signs of life, such as breathing, beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord or definite movements of voluntary muscles.

A deceased person (death) is every live born person in whom there is permanent disappearance of all evidence of life.

Natural increase is a difference between the number of live born children and the number of dead persons.

Data by age are expressed by completed years of age on the referent date. Data in age group includes persons who turned the years put as the limits of one interval.

Average age indicates the mean age of the total population and it is calculated as arithmetic mean of the age of total population.

Ageing index represents the ratio of the number of population, that is, the share (%) of inhabitants aged 60 or over in the number of inhabitants aged from 0 to 19 inclusive.

Fertile female population includes women between 15 and 49 years of age.

Place of permanent residence, according to Article 2 of the Act on Permanent and Temporary Residence of Citizens, is "a place where a person settled with an intention of staying permanently".

Immigrants are persons who registered their place of permanent residence in any settlement of the Republic of Croatia, while their previous place of permanent residence was situated in another settlement in the Republic of Croatia or abroad.

Emigrants are persons who cancelled their place of permanent residence situated within the Republic of Croatia with an intention to register it in another settlement either in the Republic of Croatia or abroad.

Net migration of population (migration balance) is the difference between the number of immigrants and emigrants of a particular area or country in a given period of time.

Territorial constitution

Data are given by territorial constitution according to the Act on Territories of Counties, Towns and Municipalities in the Republic of Croatia (NN, Nos. 86/06, 125/06 and 16/07) with the situation as on 31^st December 2008.
