STUDENTS ENROLLED ON MAGISTERIAL OR POSTGRADUATE
SPECIALIST STUDIES, 2008/2009 ACADEMIC YEAR

 

In the 2008/2009 academic year, the total of 1 779 students were enrolled on postgraduate studies. There were 1 067 women enrolled (60.0% out of the total number of students enrolled). There were 96.4% of students who enrolled on the postgraduate specialist study and 3.6% on the postgraduate magisterial (academic) study. Out of the total number of postgraduate students, 77.3% of them enrolled on studies at the University of Zagreb, 14.4% at the University of Osijek, 4.6% at the University of Rijeka, 2.5% at the University of Split and 1.2% at the University of Pula.

 

According to 5-year age groups, the largest number of students was classified in the 25 – 29 age group (40.6%), while the smallest number of students was classified in the 55-and-over age group (0.3%). There were 13.7% of students in the under-24 age group, 23.1% in the 30 – 34 age group, 12.2% in the 35 – 39 age group, 5.3% in the 40 – 44 age group, 3.8% in the 45 – 49 age group and 1.0% in the 50 – 54 age group.

 

Regarding the scientific fields of studies,  the most often chosen was the field of Social sciences with 64.5%, followed by Biomedicine and health with 22.7%, Life sciences with 4.6%, Interdisciplinary field with 3.7%,  Biotechnical sciences with 2.4%, Engineering with 2.0%, and Humanities with 0.1%.

 

Out of the total number of students, 91.0% of them were employed and 9.0% unemployed. Out of the total number of employed students, the largest number of them were employed in Human health and social work activities (25.1%), in Financial and insurance activities (13.3%), in Public administration and defence; compulsory social security (11.7%), in Professional, scientific and technical activities (9.2%), in Education (8.4%), in Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (6.9%), and in other activities (25.4%).

 

By citizenship, out of the total number of students, 99.0% of them are citizens of the Republic of Croatia and 1.0% are foreign citizens. Out of the total number of citizens of the Republic of Croatia, 97.8% have graduated in the Republic of Croatia and 2.2% in other countries.

 

By country of usual residence, 97.9% of students are residents of the Republic of Croatia and 2.1% are residents of other countries.

 

Out of the total number of students, 53.2 % of them were paying for the study themselves; 41.5% were supported by the employer and 2.4% of them were supported by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, while 2.9% were classified in  the category Other.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

 

Data source

 

Data are the result of the annual data processing on students enrolled on postgraduate master’s (academic) study according to the previous programme, or on specialist study according to the Bologna process. Data are collected through the questionnaire titled the Registration Sheet for the Enrolment of Students on Master’s or Postgraduate Specialists Studies (ŠV-30 form), which is filled in by students enrolled on any year of postgraduate master’s or specialist studies.

 

Coverage

 

The statistical survey cover all students enrolled on postgraduate master’s or specialist studies at all institutions of higher education on the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the 2008/2009 academic year.

 

Definitions and explanations

 

Postgraduate students presented in this release have enrolled and have the right to finish their study according to the previous programme as well as those enrolled on the postgraduate specialist study according to the so-called Bologna process, which is in line with the Act on Scientific Activity and Higher Education (NN, No.123/03) and the Act on Amendments to the Act on Scientific Activity and Higher Education (NN, No. 105/04).

 

Students enrolled in postgraduate magisterial study before the establishment of undergraduate and postgraduate studies pursuant to provisions of this Act will have the right to complete the study according to the curriculum and conditions required at the enrolment in the first year of study and obtain the appropriate academic degree according to the regulations in force before entry into force of this Act.

 

Institution of higher education – any institution of higher education authorised to organise and implement courses of study, as well as scientific research, highly professional or artistic work. Institutions of higher education are university and adjoining faculties and art academies, polytechnic and school of higher educational institutions of higher education may be public and private.

 

University is an institution that establishes and conducts university and interdisciplinary studies in at least two areas of scientific or artistic activity in a number of fields, as an autonomous and integrated process, indirectly or through its faculties, art academies and departments.

 

Faculty is an institution of higher education, a component part of a  university, where university studies are organized and conducted, and where scientific and professional work in one or more scientific or professional areas are developed. Professional studies can also be conducted there.

 

Art academy is an institution of higher education, a component part of a university, where artistic study is organised and conducted, and where top artistic endeavours and scientific activity in the field of art are nourished.  Professional studies can also be conducted there.

 

University department is a component part of a university where university courses are taught, and scientific, artistic or professional work in a particular filed of science or an interdisciplinary area are developed

 

Academic year starts on 1 October of the current year and ends on September 30 of the following calendar year.

 

Postgraduate magisterial (academic) study can be enrolled by any person that completed a corresponding university study. It is normally established as a study aiming at winning a master’s degree in science and offering obligatory and facultative courses. An institution of higher education that organise a postgraduate academic study defines, within enrolment conditions, which undergraduate university study is considered correspondent for the enrolment.

 

The university may organise postgraduate specialist study which shall last from one to two years and by which a university specialist title for a particular area (Spec.) shall be awarded.

 

The postgraduate study may also be conducted in co-operation with scientific institutes (interdisciplinary study).
