CANDIDATES FOR DOCTORATE – PERSONS IN PROCESS OF
OBTAINING DOCTORATE OF SCIENCE, 2008/2009 ACADEMIC YEAR

 

In the 2008/2009 academic year, out of the total of 3 102 doctoral candidates, 2 892 of them enrolled on doctoral studies and 210 registered a doctoral dissertation. The share of women was 52.3%. There were 69.3% of all doctoral studies and doctoral dissertations registered at the University of Zagreb, 14.5% at the University of Osijek, 8.7% at the University of Split, 4.7% at the University of Rijeka, 1.5% at the University of Zadar, 0.6% at the University of Pula and 0.5% at the University of Dubrovnik,  and 0.2% out of University .

 

Regarding age, the largest number of all doctoral candidates was classified in the age group under 29 (55.9%), while the smallest number of candidates was classified in the 60-and-over group (0.2%). There were 20.3% of doctoral candidates in the
30 – 34 age group, 10.5% in the 35 – 39 age group, 6.5% in the 40 – 44 age group, 4.1% in the 45 – 49 age group, 2.0% in the 50 – 54 age group and, finally, 0.5% in the 55 – 59 age group.

 

According to the scientific field of studies and registered dissertations, the most often chosen field was Engineering with 23.3%, followed by Social sciences with 21.3%, Humanities with 20.5%, Biomedicine and health with 14.2%, Life sciences with 10.8%, Biotechnical sciences with 6.7%, Interdisciplinary field with 3.2%.

 

Out of the total number of doctoral candidates, 93.5% of them were employed. The total of 6.5% of was  unemployed. By activities, the largest number of doctoral candidates were employed in Education (47.2%), in Professional, scientific and technical activities (16.1%), in Health and social welfare (13.2%), in Public administration and defence; compulsory social security (4.7%), in Information and communication (4.4%), in Arts, entertainment and recreation (2.8%) and in other activities (11.6%).

 

By citizenship, out of the total number of doctoral candidates, 97.5% of them are citizens of the Republic of Croatia and 2.5% are foreign citizens. Out of the total number of citizens of the Republic of Croatia, 97.5% have graduated in the Republic of Croatia and 2.5% in other countries.

 

By country of usual residence, 95.9% of doctoral candidates are residents of the Republic of Croatia and 4.1% are residents of other countries.

 

Out of the total number of doctoral candidates, 42.1% of them paid for doctoral study/process of obtaining a doctorate themselves, 33.4% were supported by the employer, 22.1% were supported by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, while 2.4% belonged to the category Other.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

Data source

 

Data are the result of statistical annual processing of the Registration Sheet for Doctoral Candidates – Persons in Process of Obtaining Doctorate of Science (ŠV-40 form) filled in by doctoral candidates while enrolling on study or entering doctoral dissertation.

 

Coverage

 

This statistical survey includes all doctoral candidates who enrolled on doctoral study or registered doctoral dissertation in 2007/2008 academic year.

 

Until 2004, the first release entitled Doctoral Candidates – Persons in Process of Obtaining Doctorate of Science related to the calendar year. In order to harmonise the process of monitoring and processing with other surveys in the area of higher education, doctoral candidates – persons in process of obtaining doctorate of science have been monitored all through the academic year since September 2005.

 

 

Definitions and explanations

 

Institution of higher education – any institution of higher education authorised to organise and implement courses of study as well as scientific research, highly professional or artistic work. Institutions of higher education are university and adjoining faculties and art academies, polytechnic and school of higher educational institutions of higher education may be public and private.

 

Doctoral candidates – persons in the process of obtaining a doctorate of science – they can enrol in organised postgraduate doctoral study or register a doctoral dissertation in accordance with the  Act on Scientific Activity and Higher Education (NN, No.123/03) and the Act on Amendments to the Act on Scientific Activity and Higher Education (NN, No. 105/04).

 

Postgraduate university study can be enrolled on after the completion of a graduate university study.

 

Postgraduate university study lasts, as a rule, for three years and, upon its completion, the academic degree of Doctor of Science (Dr. Sc.) or Doctor of Arts (Dr. Art.) is awarded.

 

Students enrolled on postgraduate doctoral study before the establishment of undergraduate and postgraduate studies pursuant to provisions of this Act will have the right to complete the study according to the curriculum and conditions required at the enrolment in the first year of study and obtain the appropriate academic degree according to the regulations in force before entry into force of this Act.

 

Students to whom the topic of their doctoral dissertation without the doctoral study has been approved according to the previous regulations will have the right to defend their doctoral dissertation and obtain the scientific doctoral degree according to the regulations in force before entry into force of this Act.

 

Persons who have obtained the master’s degree according to the regulations in force before entry into force of this Act may, in accordance with the regulations of the university, obtain the doctoral degree by defending the doctoral dissertation according to the regulations in force on the date of entry into force of this Act, at the latest within the term of eight years from the date of its entry into force.

 

Students enrolled in postgraduate master’s study according to provisions valid before entry into force of this Act, but have not completed it, may have the right, at their request, to complete the study, providing that they fulfilled certain conditions (passing of exams, fulfilling other obligations), by producing the doctoral dissertation and obtain the degree of the doctor of science, if it is defined in general provisions of the university.
