MASTERS AND SPECIALISTS, 2008

 

In 2008, by completing the postgraduate study according to either old or new programme, out of the total of 871 candidates, there were 67.7% who attained the academic title of master of science, 14.1% attained the title of master, and 18.2% attained the title of specialist. The share of women was 54.5%.

 

At the University of Zagreb, 67.7% of all candidates defended the master’s degree or completed the postgraduate specialist study, followed by 12.0% at the University of Osijek, 7.7% at the University of Rijeka, 7.5% at the University of Split, 1.4% at the University of Pula, 0.9% at the University of Dubrovnik, 0.7% at the University of Zadar, and 2.1% out of university.

 

In 2008, the greatest number of master’s and specialist theses was written in the field of social sciences, 57.7%, followed by engineering, 13.7%, life sciences, 7.0%, humanities, 6.9%, biomedicine and health, 6.4%, biotechnical sciences, 5.3%, and interdisciplinary field 2.2%. The lowest number of master’s theses was written in the field of arts, 0.8%.

 

The average age of masters of science, masters and specialists was 36.5 years, while the age in the modal group (with the highest frequency) ranged between 30 and 34. At the average, women were younger (35 years) than men (38 years).

 

The greatest number of candidates was employed in education, 20.6%, followed by public administration and defence; compulsory social security, professional, scientific and technical activities, 10.3%, financial and insurance activities 9.5%, health and social welfare 7.5%, manufacturing 7.0%, information and communication 6.5%, wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicle and motorcycles 3.7%. 14.7% of candidates were employed in other activities, while 4.1% were unemployed.

 

Out of the total number of candidates 95.3% of them graduated in the Republic of Croatia, while 4.7% of them graduated outside the Republic of Croatia.

 

57.6% of costs of the postgraduate study leading to the master’s degree were paid by candidates themselves, employers paid for 33.2% of them, the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports paid for 5.4%, while 3.8% belonged to the category Other.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

Data sources

 

Data are the result of the annual data processing. Data are collected through the Statistical Sheets for Masters or Specialists (ŠV-80 form), which are filled in by masters of science, masters and specialists in the course of attaining to this title.

 

Coverage and comparability

 

The statistical survey covers institutions of higher education in the Republic of Croatia that establish and carry out the postgraduate scientific, professional or artistic study leading to the master’s degree and university postgraduate specialist study according to the Act on Scientific Activity and Higher Education (NN, No.123/03) and the Act on Amendments to the Act on Scientific Activity and Higher Education (NN, No. 105/04).

Data are comparable to data from previous years.

 

Definitions and explanations

 

Students enrolled in postgraduate study leading to the master’s degree before the establishment of university postgraduate studies pursuant to provisions of this Act will have the right to complete the study according to the curriculum and conditions required at the enrolment in the first year of study and obtain the appropriate academic degree according to the regulations in force before entry into force of this Act. Consistently, the Release presents students who completed the postgraduate study according to either old or new programme.

 

Institution of higher education is every institution providing higher education and authorised to establish and carry out a study as well as scientific highly qualified or artistic work. Institutions of higher education are divided to: university and adjoining faculties and art academies, polytechnic and school of higher education. Institutions of higher education may be public and private.

 

Master’s and specialist theses are classified according to the Rule Book of Scientific and Artistic Disciplines, Fields and Branches (NN, No. 78/08).

 

Interdisciplinary studies cover many different scientific fields. They are conducted in cooperation by institutions of higher education and institutes.

 

Postgraduate university study can be enrolled after the completion of a graduate university study.

 

Master of Science (M.S.) is a person who completed a postgraduate scientific study leading to the master’s degree and attained to the master’s degree in science. (ISCED, 5A).

 

Master is a person who completed a postgraduate professional study leading to the master’s degree and won a professional or artistic master’s degree. (ISCED, 5A).

 

University specialist title for a particular area (Spec.) is a person who completed the university postgraduate specialist study, prepared a final work and/or passed an appropriate final exam.
