GRADUATES ON PROFESSIONAL AND UNIVERSITY STUDY IN 2008

This first release reports on students who graduated from institutions of higher education in the Republic of Croatia either according to the "old" programme (professional and university undergraduate study) or the Bologna process (professional and specialist professional graduate study, undergraduate, graduate and integrated undergraduate and graduate university study).

During 2008, there were 25 573 students who graduated from institutions of higher education, which was by 22% more than in the previous year. Out of the total number of graduated students, 69.6% were full-time and 30.4% part-time ones. Out of the full-time students, 66.7% were supported by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, while the rest of 33.3% self-financed themselves. The share of female students who graduated in 2008 was 58.7%, which was by 0.6% more than in the previous year.

Out of the total number of students who graduated in 2008, 13.5% graduated from polytechnics, 5.4% from schools of professional higher education, 79.7% from faculties (out of that, 26.6% from professional studies and 73.4% from university studies) and 1.4% from art academies.

Regarding their age, 4.3% of students who graduated in 2008 were under 21 years of age, 39.6% were in the 21 – 23 age group, 30.6% were in the 24 – 26 age group, 11.0% were in the 27 − 29 age group and 14.5% were in the 30-and-over age group.

Out of the total number of students, 72.9% of them graduated according to the “old” programme and 27.1% according to the Bologna process.

According to the Bologna process, the largest number of students, 55.7% of them, graduated from an undergraduate university study, followed by 39.9% who graduated from a professional study, 3.6% from a specialist professional graduate study and 0.8% from a graduate university study.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Source and method of data collection

Data are the result of the annual data processing on students graduated from institutions of higher education in the Republic of Croatia in 2008. They are collected through the questionnaire entitled Statistical Sheet for Students Graduated from Professional and University Study (ŠV-50 form), which is filled in by students graduated from undergraduate professional or university studies.

Coverage and comparability

The statistical survey covers all students who graduated from the institutions of higher education on the territory of the Republic of Croatia. It includes both students who graduated according to the “old” programme and those who graduated according to the Bologna process. Data are comparable to those from previous years.

Definitions and explanations

Students are persons enrolled in institutions of higher education. There are full-time and part-time students. A full-time student studies on regular basis either with the support of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports or by paying for the study himself. A part-time student studies on a part-time basis supported either by himself or by his employer.

Institutions of higher education are university and faculty and academy of art as its component parts, polytechnic and school of higher education.
