PUBLISHED BOOKS AND BROCHURES, NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES, 2008

 

In 2008, there were 8 025 books and brochures issued. The most books and brochures issued were classified into the UDK group "Social sciences", 23.9%, followed by groups "Languages. Literature", 21.0%, and "Applied sciences. Medicine. Technology", 13.3%.

 

Most books and brochures (93.0% of the total number of issues) were issued in Croatian, then in English (3.1%) and in German (1.2%).

 

In 2008, there were 2 525 magazines and 334 newspapers issued, which was almost the same as in 2007. Most magazines and newspapers were issued in Croatian (2 597 issues, or 90.8%) and the rest of them in foreign languages (262 issues, or 9.2%). There were 163 magazines and newspapers issued in English, 17 in German, 21 in Italian etc.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

Source and method of data collection

 

Data are the result of the statistical processing obtained in electronic way from the National and University Library, as an only reporting unit, for the following surveys: the Annual Report on Books and Brochures (NKL-1 form), the Annual Report on Newspapers (NKL-2 form) and the Annual Report on Magazines (NKL-3 form).

 

Coverage and comparability

 

The statistical survey on issued books and brochures covers all printed non-periodical publications, while the statistical survey on magazines and newspapers covers all printed serial (periodical) publications that are published in the Republic of Croatia, publicly available and included in the national bibliography.

 

Excluded from the statistical surveys on issued books and brochures, magazines and newspapers are the following publications:

 

a) publications issued for promotional purposes – trading catalogues, booklets and other forms of trading, industrial or tourist promotion;

b) publications considered to be of temporary value – timetables, price lists, telephone books, programmes of exhibitions or fairs, calendars, reports of business companies;

c)  publications in which text does not represent the main part – music works, maps and graphs, road maps, topographic maps.

 

Data are comparable to those from previous years

 

Definitions and explanations

 

Book is a non-periodical printed publication having at least 49 pages, excluding the cover.

 

Brochure is a non-periodical publication having at least 5 but not more than 48 pages, excluding the cover.

 

Magazines are serial (periodical) publications intended for giving studies and documentary information on various issues. The treatment of articles may be expert or scientific.

 

Newspapers are serial (periodical) publications that offer news of general or special interest on current events. Particular parts are listed in a chronological or numerical way and are published at least once a week.

 

Publication is non-periodical if it is published at once or in intervals by volumes, the number of which is defined in advance.

 

Publication is periodical if it makes one issue in continuous series under the same title and if it is published on regular basis or during a temporary undefined time, providing that particular issues in a series are subsequently numbered or that every single issue is dated.

 

Universal Decimal Classification (UDK) is a system for classification of librarian material accepted by the International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID).
