ARTISTIC PRODUCTION AND LIVE PERFORMANCES, 2008/2009 SEASON

 

There were 64 theatres operating in the 2008/2009 season. A part of professional theatres dispose of permanent scenes, either in-house or on some other location, so, along with 23 professional theatres, there were 6 permanent scenes operating. In addition, there were 14 professional children’s theatres, out of which there were 7 puppet theatres. There were also 27 amateurs’ theatres operating.

 

The total of 7 388 plays were performed, slightly less than in the previous season (by 1.2%). The plays were attended by 1 580 788 visitors, which presents a decrease of 5.1%, as compared to the previous season. The average number of plays per professional theatre, including permanent scenes, was 143, while the average number of visitors per play was 249. Out of the total number of 877 plays performed in all theatres, there were 475 of them, or 54.2%, created by domestic authors.

 

During the 2008/2009 season, there were 22 professional orchestras and ensembles operating, out of which 7 were symphony and large orchestras, 5 chamber orchestras and 10 chamber ensembles. There were 590 concerts performed, which was by 6.5% less than in the previous season.

 

During the season, professional choir held 22 concerts. The same concerts were attended by 7 090 visitors.

 

LADO – National Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia held 92 concerts, which means there were 10 concerts less than in the previous season. These concerts were attended by 78 510 visitors.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

Sources and methods of data collection

 

Data are the result of the processing of statistical reports filled in by professional, children’s and amateurs’ theatres on the Annual Report on Theatres (KU-1 form), then by professional orchestras, ensembles and choirs on the Annual Report on Professional Orchestras, Ensembles and Choirs (KU-2 form), and finally by the LADO – National Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia on the Annual Report on Professional Folk and Song Ensembles (KU-3 form).

 

Coverage and comparability

 

The survey covers professional, professional children’s and amateurs’ theatres, professional orchestras, ensembles and choirs on the territory of the Republic of Croatia, which were performing in the 2008/2009 season, and the LADO – National Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia.

 

Definitions and explanations

 

Professional theatre is a cultural and artistic institution, that is, an artistic organisation either with a resident professional company or a professional company recruited only for individual performances on contractual basis.

 

Professional children’s theatre is a professional theatre regularly giving performances for children, which includes the participation of children along with that of a professional company.

 

Amateurs’ theatre is a theatre in which the artistic company consists mostly of amateurs. It can be either independent, or making a part of an association of cultural-artistic amateurism, home of culture etc.

 

Scene is a separate space in a theatre or on other location on which a professional company performs.

 

Professional orchestras/choirs are musical ensembles consisting of professional musicians/singers, who may be employed either on permanent or on contractual basis.

 

LADO National Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia is a professional institution aimed at collecting authentic national folklore and artistic presentation of folk dances, music and songs.

 

Concert is a public performance that is a constituent part of the whole programme of an event, while performing during formal events and festivities includes participation only in a part of the whole program.
