In 2008, there were 15 state archives operating, out of which 7 of them had archive branch offices. Regarding the territorial competence, that is, the area in which an archive is operating, there were 1 state, 10 intercounty and 4 county archives.

 

Compared to 2005, the total number of archival funds and collections increased by 5.0%, the number of arranged funds and collections by 3.4%, the number of users by 11.4%, the total number of persons in employment by 4.9% and the number of archivists by 5.8%. The share of women in the total number of persons in employment was 60.5%.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

Sources and methods of data collection

 

The data are the result of statistical data processing collected on the Statistical Report on Archives (ARH-1 form) taken over from all state archives in the Republic of Croatia. The data are collected on triennial basis.

 

Coverage and comparability

 

The statistical survey covers all state archives on the territory of the Republic of Croatia operating in 2008 and the data are comparable to those from previous years.

 

Definitions and explanations

 

State archives are public institutions engaged in preservation, processing and using of state-owned archival material.

 

Archival material are historically, scientifically or culturally  relevant records or documents (written, printed, drawn, pictorial, audio- or recorded on some other medium) made by natural persons or legal entities.

 

Public archival material is archival material created by state bodies, government and self-government, public institutions, enterprises and corporate bodies, legal entities and individuals who perform a public service.

 

Archival fund is a unit of archival material collected as a result of activities of a natural person or a legal entity.

 

Archival collection is a collection of documents of diverse provenance put together under some joint feature, such as content, language, medium etc.

 

Sound recordings are vinyl records, tapes, cassettes, CDs or DVDs and other audio recording media.

 

Graphic records are records whose information content is presented through still pictures or geometric shapes.

 

Digital copy is a copy in a form of a digital record.

 

Microfilm is a film in a form of a reel containing sequence of microimages.

 

Microfishe is a flexible, transparent, rectangular piece of film serving as a medium for a sequence of microimages arranged in lines and columns.

 

Finding aid is a list of archival fund or collection assigned to helping researchers get the access to the content of a fund or a collection. Basic types of finding aids are a guide, an inventory and an index.

 

Restoration consists of a number of actions taken in order to remove or lessen the damage on a certain object.

 

Conservation consists of a number of actions taken in order to prevent or slow down the process of deterioration of a certain object.
