WORLD STATISTICS DAY, OCTOBER 20th

World Statistics Day - Official Site
  Link to official web site

This year marks the first celebration of the World Statistics Day founded by UN Statistics Division with the intention of strengthening the awareness and trust of the public in the official statistics. Joined under the motto Celebrating the many achievements of official statistics, most of the world's national statistics agencies will celebrate the day through organizing activities. The Croatian Bureau of Statistics, as the principal producer, disseminator, and coordinator of the official statistics system of the Republic of Croatia, will make no exception and join in the celebrations.

Designating 20 October as the World Statistics Day is a recognition to the importance of the place that the statistics holds in the society on both national and international levels. One of the responsibilities all national statistical agencies share, including the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, is the effective and timely preparation and dissemination of high-quality statistical indicators, which influence economic and social phenomena and processes, and which provide for their users reliable sources for decision making and shaping their attitudes according to the given facts.

Following the Principles of European Statistics Code of Practice, our activities are aimed at satisfying user needs, which present the reason and the purpose for the existence of statistical system. The statistics system will reaffirm its purpose as long as its indicators are being requested and used, and our users of official statistical data may be found in all the spheres of economic and social life, ranging from individuals, business entities, bodies of legislative, executive, and judicial power, state administration and local self-government bodies, academic, scientific and research institutions, and NGOs, to European and other international institutions.

We use our knowledge and experience on a daily basis to make statistics more coherent, understandable and accessible for users providing a treatment that statistics, a common good of the society, deserves. For that reason, we have decided to commemorate World Statistics Day by bringing users into focus. The Croatian Bureau of Statistics released a new publication “Croatia in Figures”. Most of the European statistical agencies regularly release publications containing key indicators of a particular country. Whereas the Croatian Bureau of Statistics had not released such a publication since the proclamation of independence of Croatia, World Statistics Day seemed a cause great enough to mark it with the first release.

Finally, having in mind the fact that the development of a statistical system is a complex procedure requiring a constant dialogue with the statistical data users, we would like to take this opportunity and thank you for your contribution hoping our future cooperation will be as successful.
